The long-awaited local government elections in Cross River State took place on November 2, 2024, and have now entered the collation stage. Governor Prince Bassey Edet Otu participated in the electoral process, casting his vote alongside his wife at the Adiabo-Ukotikang polling unit located in Government Primary School Adiabo Efut.
After voting, Governor Otu expressed optimism about the All Progressives Congress (APC) securing a significant victory in the elections. “Our ruling party, the APC, is confident of winning the majority of seats in the 18 local government areas,” he stated. He attributed this confidence to the party’s commitment to good governance and its strong popularity among the electorate.
The elections were monitored by both local and international observers, who praised the peaceful atmosphere at the polling units. Adequate security forces were deployed throughout the state to ensure the safety of voters and election personnel.
However, reports indicated that some polling units, particularly in the Calabar Municipal Local Government Area, faced delays and shortages of election materials. Governor Otu expressed concern over these issues, noting that they could impact voter participation and the overall integrity of the electoral process.
As the state awaits the results, which the Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) is expected to announce within 48 hours, Governor Otu remains hopeful for a successful outcome that reflects the will of the people. This election marks a crucial moment for local governance in Cross River State, following the last local government elections held in 2020.
